GRATITUDE TO THE UNSEEN
June 2, 1997
these big black bird brothers gronking at the compost,
they are grateful for the New York City bagels.
they do not know gifford brought them Friday.
they have a sleek design all in black like the most cosmopolitan New Yorker,
but who designed them?
who figured out the eyes should be black?
who decided where the wings would go?
Gifford brought the bagels but who brought the black birds?
all over the lawn, are tiny little strawberry plants…
special bird sized bites of fruit will be found there soon.
today the flowers help me find them. i think i know who put them there.
the man who built this house thirty years ago, bless him,
he put in many serendipity touches that outlive his participation
with this property. iris beds of great population, and passionate peonies
that come back no matter what, every summer.
he put in fruit trees too, but who made fruit trees? and who made that man?
