WE MUST BE WHAT WE ARE….
helping the ants is work. i would tell them “look get out of there someone will step
on you. go over there. it will work better.” ants don’t know i exist.
they have no idea how i am. how could they trust me to advise them?
isn’t this like our relationship; with God?
i was five years old, years ago, i was outside, on the sidewalk of the
housing project with Michael, my first friend. we were a great pair. Michael had a
way of letting me be profound. we were not even at the age of reason yet, but i told
Michael “look, these ants don’t know us. they don’t even know we are watching
them trying to move these donut crumbs. they don’t know we gave them crumbs
either. this is like God looking at us. we are so small compared to God, it’s just like
these ants.” Michael thought about my hunch. he liked to ponder.
we were never interested in the cap pistols, holsters, guns and tanks.
we watched ants and picked dandelions. there wasn’t much nature in
our courtyard back then, but we found it. we played in the dirt,
with plastic barn animals. we helped ants, a lot of summer days.
there were always plenty of crumbs to share.
helping turtles is a drag. they act like you are trying to kill them. they waggle arms
and legs. they snap. they act cranky. they have no clue they are
being helped. we escorted a turtle off the highway to a river. was he glad?? no.
was he grateful? no. at least ten cars a minute, come over that road. turtle was
cruising for a bruising. he didn’t seem to know it. we stuck our necks out for him.
cars were speeding bye. we were in the way. they were mad, honking at us. turtle
was trying to reach Steve’s helping fingers to bite him. the river did not care that
the turtle made it to water either.
God must be misunderstood a billion times a day, or not remembered, even more
than that… what is it like to provide for creatures constantly? there must be a lot of
machines or screens to keep it going. it does not seem to matter,
that we don’t care.
the turtle was rude. Steve put him in the water, off the road. we saw the danger
stacking up. we had to make a difference because we could.
you would have.
it was too obvious.
we must be, what we are… what could God be?
